Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5g – This Smartphone got it all

An impressive 5G Smartphone, that is the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G. Xiaomi took the best of the best and made it the Mi 9 Pro 5G. A truly astonishing package.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G packs some impressive specs. It comes with a Snapdragon 855 Plus and an Adreno 640. That is the best and fastest processor that Qualcomm offers at this moment. You also get 8 or 12 GB RAM depending on the version you pick. Internal memory goes from 256 to 512 GB.  The Mi 9 Pro 5G starts were many other smartphones don’t even spec out.

The internal memory is not expandable but the SIM-card-slot holds up to two cards. It also comes with WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5 and NFC to round up the great spec-list.

I hoped that the dual-GPS would give better reception in the narrow streets, but it did not perform any better. It worked as fast and precise as any other smartphone.

Solid build

The front and back are covered in glass and the sides are made of aluminum. Below there is a mono speaker, one microphone and a USB-C port. On the right side the volume switch and the power button. It comes in a beautiful red and is also textured.

On the left, there is the SIM-card-slot which does have a rubber ring to seal of some dust and water, but there is no IP-Rating. So better be careful with the Mi 9 Pro 5G.

On top, there is another microphone and an IR-Blaster. For everyone who likes to control their TV with their smartphone. And even though there is no headphone jack, at least Xiaomi is including an adapter in the box. That is missing from most other manufacturers. Unfortunately, there is only a mono speaker. For a mono speaker it sounds good, but it just can’t hold up the stereo speakers. So don’t expect too much of it.

The USB-C port can be used to charge the phone with 40W, which is really fast. There is also wireless charging with a record-breaking 30W. I don’t even own a charger that supports that.

So it is really easy and fast to top off the 4000 mAh battery. This brings me through a whole day of heavy use and I still got 30 to 40% left at the end of the day. And if that is not enough, with reverse wireless charging the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G can top of other devices with you to 10 W. That again is more than any other smartphone on the market can handle.

Xiaomi is including a 45W charger in the box, so that you can even top of your laptop with it. Again something you are missing from many other phones.

FHD+ but still a great screen

The 6.39 inch AMOLED has only FHD+ resolution but still is plenty sharp. The colors are vibrant and the blacks are truly black. As you would expect from an AMOLED. The screen is great for outdoor use because it gets up the 600nit bright. And the viewing angles are exceptional too.

Oh, and above the screen there is a notification LED, but there is also an always-on display function. Underneath the display is the optical fingerprint reader. From the very first moment on, it was impressive in speed and accuracy. During my testing I only had very few failed attempts.

The speed is really impressive for an optical fingerprint reader.

Soon with Android 10

Right now there is Android 9 with MIUI 10.4.6 running on the Mi 9 Pro 5G with the security patch from August. But the Update to Android 10 and MIUI 11 should be almost on its way.

Since this device is an import from China there is only English and Chinese available and there is no Band 20 on the Mi 9 Pro 5G. Which could influence the LTE reception in some regions of Europe.

This Mi 9 Pro 5G was provided by TradingShenzhen. They even install the Google Play Store and services for you on the phone. Because right out of the box these are not preinstalled.

Everything stills work great as you would expect from a great smartphone with these specs. The system, apps, and games run just fine. Even when you open several apps, thanks to the 8 or 12 GB of RAM these apps open right up and don’t have to be reloaded.

You can even install your own launcher on the device.

Something not many people are paying attention to is the vibration motor. But it is important in your everyday use. The vibration motor in the Mi 9 Pro 5G is better than in most other phone and that is very welcome.

Strong camera setup

For everyone who has been waiting for it, we are finally looking at the cameras. Let’s start on the front with the 20 MP selfie camera. It can be found in a waterdrop notch at the top of the display.

The pictures are pretty good and the camera is wide enough to get a lot in the shot. But I did expect more details from a 20 MP camera. Even when you turn down the beauty mode the details could still be better.

The portrait modus works fine and is adjustable. But I wouldn’ t turn it up the high. For one it looks really fake and the edge detections or let’s say the errors of the edge detection get more obvious.

Videos are recorded at 1080p and even with HDR enabled there is still not much dynamic range. A reasonable stabilization is also missing. Overall the front-facing camera is okay for a quick selfie but not much more.

More important are the three main shooters on the back of the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G. We get a 48 MP wide standard camera, a 12 MP telephoto camera and a 16 MP ultra-wide camera.

The 48 MP camera produces as a standard 12 MP pictures but if you want to, there is a 48 MP picture mode available. You get a stronger digital zoom with the 48 MP pictures but you do not gain many details over the 12 MP pictures. The grouping of 4 pixels works great and you get excellent 12 MP pictures.

The photos from all three cameras look great. The dynamic range is good, the colors are accurate and are very close to life. Only the pictures from the ultra-wide camera are a little darker due to a smaller aperture. And even when the three cameras differ in brightness a little bit, the colors are very close. Even though it is not perfect.

Videos can be recorded in 4K with 60 fps. The colors are true to real-life too, but the dynamic range is lacking a lot and also the stabilization is none existing. But these problems only exist in 40K 60 fps. As soon as you go the 4K 30 fps you get a good dynamic range and decent stabilization. That is true for all three cameras.

The Mi 9 Pro 5G is really good for photos and if you don’t need 4K/60 videos turn out great too.

Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G an impressive package

It is quite impressive everything Xiaomi packed into the Mi 9 Pro 5G, but did you notice that I didn’t mention 5G besides from the name of this smartphone? Well, there are two issues with that. First of all, I do live in Germany and there is not much going on with 5G here and my mobile plan does not support it either. All I can tell you is that this 600 € phone supports 5G and is packed with crazy specs.
